African Livestock Genetic Resources and Sustainable Breeding Strategies

Abstract

While individual national or regional organizations facilitate data collection, storage, management, and utilization within their respective countries/regions, collective efforts through coming together under one umbrella organization facilitate international cooperation and collaboration. Examples of such international cooperations are the International Bull Evaluation centre (INTERBULL), the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR), and the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL). The INTERBULL is based in Uppsala, Sweden. It was set up specifically to undertake and regulate international evaluation of dairy bulls. It specializes in providing international genetic evaluation of dairy bulls across countries so that these can be ranked on the same scale across countries. This ranking of bulls on the same scale facilitates across-country comparison and trade in dairy cattle genetic resources.
