Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a multifactorial functional digestive disorder
characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, altered bowel habits, and digestive discomfort,
associated with gut dysbiosis, low-grade inflammation, and oxidative stress.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of kefir consumption on the clinical
manifestations and biological markers of IBS.
Before kefir consumption, subjects presented with marked digestive symptoms
(abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits), associated with elevated MDA and
CRP levels, as well as decreased GSH and catalase levels, reflecting an oxidative and
inflammatory imbalance.
After kefir consumption, clinical improvement was observed, with a reduction in
digestive symptoms. Biologically, a decrease in MDA and CRP was noted, along with an
increase in GSH and catalase, indicating an improvement in oxidative stress and
inflammation. Renal parameters (urea and creatinine) remained stable, while vitamin D
levels increased slightly.
These results suggest that kefir could improve IBS symptoms and have a beneficial
effect on oxidative stress and inflammation, thus representing a promising complementary
nutritional approach.
