Mugwort "Artemisia herba alba" is a medicinal plant belonging to the Asteraceae family, known by the vernacular name "Chih". It is widespread in southern Algeria, and widely used in traditional medicine for its many virtues. The objective of this work is to evaluate in vitro the antioxidant and antidiabetic activity of the water-acetone extract of Artemisia herba alba prepared by a decoction under reflux. The determination of polyphenols and total flavonoids showed a high content of the order of 542.7 μg EAG / mg E and 267.28 μg EC / mg E, respectively. Regarding the study of antioxidant activity, using the DPPH radical scavenging and iron reduction (FRAP) method we revealed significant activity with IC50 values of 30.51 μg / ml and d 'EC50 equal to 128.88 μg / ml, respectively. The water-acetone extract showed remarkable antidiabetic activity in vitro by inhibiting the activity of α-amylase, which has an IC50 value of 606.18 μg / ml. The antioxidant (FRAP, DPPH) and antidiabetic activity by inhibition of α-amylase in the extract of Artemisia herba alba are probably related to the richness of this extract in polyphenols and flavonoids. The water-acetone extract of Artemisia herba alba has revealed its richness in phenolic compounds, and its interesting antioxidant capacities by exhibiting an anti-free radical and iron reducing power, and antidiabetic by inhibiting the activity of α-amylase. In conclusion, these results allow to qualify Artemisia herba alba as an antioxidant and antidiabetic plant. Key words: Artemisia herba alba, phenolic compounds, DPPH, FRAP, α-amylase. en_US
