Crossing Borders, Shifting Beliefs: The Influence of Studying Abroad on Algerian Returnees’ Identities and Cultural Beliefs

Abstract

The Algerian higher educational system has integrated scholarships and exchange programs to provide students with opportunities for higher quality learning. This study aims at providing a comprehensive overview regarding the impact of long-term study abroad experiences on students’ identities and attitudes, examining factors that influence and lead to the readjustment and reconstruction of the identity. It was conducted in Tlemcen university within its different departments and beyond. Semi-structured interviews were used to elicit participant’s narratives and experiences. The data were analysed using thematic analysis and inductive approach. Results showed that returnees were through different means influenced by the different cultures they were living within and their identities shifted.
