Abstract
The present dissertation investigates the subject of teaching literature in general and
assessment in literature in particular. The researcher tried during the empirical research to
know the conditions of teaching literature and the methods used in it, and the assessment
activities that is given by teachers for their students. The research includes qualitative and
quantitative approaches. That, the teaching of literature in the sections does not follow a
certain approach, yet teachers use different methods and are not standardized and this because
of the different to their teaching experiences. The study showed that teachers do not
pay much attention to the assessment process in the literature, despite the many answers
that contribute to the detection of the difficulties that may be faced by students in the
learning of literature effectively. Thus, it stimulates teachers of literature to find solutions
such as a change in teaching methods and others. The study also showed satisfaction of
most students on the various methods used, but they made many suggestions, although
they still prefer the approach of teacher' centeredness, literature teachers did not mention
greatly assessment process because of the lack of time. In order to improve the teaching
of literature, a number of suggestions were made about the importance of evaluation and
making it part of the teaching process.
