Abstract
This work is a sociolinguistic study of code switching in Algeria, and more
specifically in EFL classrooms, taking the 2nd year pupils of BESSEGHIR Lakhder
secondary school in Tlemcen as a case in point . The objective of this study is to
discover the different codes used in EFL class, and the main reasons that lead both
teachers and pupils to codeswitch. In addition to determine their attitudes toward CS. In
order to acheive this aims, a case study was adopted relying on mixed method by using
two different research tools to collect data : a questionnaire for pupils, and an interview
for teachers . The results revealed that the majority of participants switch between
Arabic and English in classroom for different reasons in different situations. They use
CS just to cover the gaps they have in communication since they think that it enables
them to interact effectively and helps them understand and be understood by each other.
Moreover, both teachers and pupils are aware of its negative effects on language
learning and acquisition, but although that, they support it and they agree on that CS
helps on promoting classroom interaction.
