Abstract
In the teaching of English as a foreign language, both for general and specific purposes, it is
crucial to identify and analyse the needs of the learners before designing an appropriate
syllabus. As regards the department of Biology, within which the present research work was
conducted throughout the year 2012-2013, we have tried to highlight the learners’ weaknesses,
needs and wants in order to reach the objective of designing a specific syllabus that includes
students’ assessment and course evaluation to measure the efficiency of the proposed syllabus.
Our wish and ultimate aim in this research work is to contribute to the improvement of the
teaching/learning of English in that department.
