dc.description.abstractThe present research work aims to diagnose the status of the summary techniques in the writing process and to identify the third year EFL students‟ summary difficulties, also to find out the reasons behind these difficulties, this study attempts to help students overcome their summary weaknesses and propose an effective strategies which promote their summarizing proficiency, it hopefully seeks to make summarizing enjoyable practice for EFL students. This research work is based on the investigation of the writing skill and its techniques, the first chapter spoke about the definition of writing as language skill and its importance in the language teaching and also reported the historical background of this productive skill, the next chapter presented the situation of teaching writing skill in the Algerian educational system and described the implementation of the LMD system in the Algerian universities, concerning the research method and design were fully explained in this chapter. The third chapter devoted to the data analysis and interpretation of the main results. The researcher analyzed the data from the research instruments namely students‟ writing test , teachers‟ and students‟ questionnaires On the basis of the findings achieved, the last chapter proposed some recommendations and suggestions that hamper learners to develop their summary writing performance, these suggestions will focus on the teachers‟ and learners‟ role; in the same time the characteristics of readable summaries .
