The interest in metabolic disturbances of plasma lipoproteins and in oxidative stress usually observed in patients with both type I and type 2 diabetes rely on the links between these disturbances and apparition ofcardiovascular complications. Our study was based on the evaluation of Iipid and lipoprotein disturbances and of some antioxidant status parameters in diabetics with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and insulin-requiring diabetes mellitus (IRDM) in Tlemcen city (n=24, women/men) aged 28 to 57. AIl of patients and control healthy subjects were selected from several criteria (no disease, physiological state or drugs which can interfère with lipids and lipoproteins metabolisms) These 2 groups of diabetics did flot present any significant différence in the rate of HDL-C, triglycerides, Lp(a) and non-esterified free fatty acids compared with controls. 1-Iowever, the concentrations of CT are lowered in men with IDDM and women with IRI)M, and LDL-C and apo B were found to be decreased in patients with IDDM and women with IRDM compared to controls. The 2 groups of diabetics also presented an increase in Apo A-I, LCAT cofactor, compared to controls. HDL3 subfractions phospholipids, substrates of this enzyme, are increased in men with IRI)M but remain normal for the rest of the diabetic population compared to controls. The LCAT activity determination revealed an increase for patients with IDDM ofboth genders. The measure of serum vitamin C rates revealed an increase in patients with IDDM and women with IRDM. However, patients with IDDM presented a decreased catalase activity, suggesting the existence of an oxidative stress. In conclusion, ail of the diabetics do flot present any unfavourable variation ofcardiovascular diseases markers (HDL-C, triglycerides, LDL-C and Lp(a)), suggesting the absence of atherogenic profile. Moreover, these diabetics present very similar lipids and lipoproteins profiles, which presume that type oftreatment, in this case insulin therapy, influence these profiles.
