Résumé: The current study investigates the impact of English movies in improving students’ proficiency in English vocabulary with reference to third year EFL students at Tlemcen University, Algeria. Since English is the most widely used language for communication in the world, mastering that language has become crucial and essential in our lives. Actually, EFL learners struggle with their shortcomings in English: insufficient vocabulary, weak grammar, and lack mastery of the four language skills. Besides, English is not used authentically in the settings in which learners live, and learners are not motivated to learn in an ordinary way. One of the extensive multimedia technologies that have become gradually common in the learning of English as a foreign language is watching movies. Our research aims at investigating the effectiveness of watching English movies on students’ proficiency in the English language. This descriptive study uses a quantitative method to collect data through a questionnaire employed to set participants’ attitudes towards such a practice as well as its effectiveness. The results revealed that most students usually watch English movies and this proves to be very effective, helpful, and motivating for them. Moreover, the students’ four language skills are improved during this process and their vocabulary proficiency level is, simultaneously, enhanced.
