Abstract
Bioplastics are an alternative to replace conventional synthetic plastics. However, the
properties in general are found much more mediocre hence the idea of reinforcing them with
reinforcements that can provide the missing properties while preserving, in part, the
biodegradable character. The objective of this work is therefore the development and
characterization of plastic films based on corn starch, reinforced by a mineral filler,
montmorillonite (MMT), and a synthetic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and
plasticized by glycerol. Compatibility studies indicate that the starch / PVP mixture is
incompatible. The addition of formaldehyde can improve to a certain extent the phase
separation behavior between starch and PVP. Composite films have been developed by the
casting method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy Fourier
Transform (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mechanical analysis dynamics
(DMA) and the scanning electron microscope (SEM).
